St. Simeon monastery
On the west bank of the Nile at Aswan, the desert extends up to the waters edge. There is little of development along this shore, but there are several attractions that make it worth the ride across the river.
The Monastery of St. Simeon was established in the 7th century by Coptic monks seeking to escape to the meditative and solitude life of the desert. The complex was rebuilt at least once before it was finally abandoned in the 13th century; however, the monastery remains in surprisingly great .
The complex was surrounded by walls to protect the monk from the raiders and other threats and the stone and mudbrick walls make for an great look on approach. It gives impression of thoughts of a medieval fortress more than a religious structure. Inside are the remains of a church, a stable, and other buildings important to the simple lives of these medieval monks.
The cemetery of the monastery has revealed nearly two hundred tombs, many of which arranged in date from the 6th through the 9th century. Their text, which shows three distinct editions and different prayer formulas, is highly valuable to researchers.
